11 December
our gritters have names

The council recently asked school pupils to submit ideas for the council's fleet of 8 gritters. Over 700 names were received.

A team of judges - including our gritter drivers - then whittled the 700 down to 20 finalists. A survey was then launched online asking members of the public to vote for the 20 finalists. The chosen eight names are:

  • Sir Chilly Connolly (Katie Ford, S1 West Calder High School)
  • Han Snowlo (Bellsquarry Primary School P6)
  • West Snowthian (Whitburn Academy 5W1; Sycamore class, Dedridge Autism Resource)
  • Alba Gritting Ye (Alfie Dunnett, P5 Boghall Primary)
  • Meltin John (Alba Macgregor, P1 Williamston Primary School)
  • Elvis Spreadly (Matthew Fontaine, S5 The James Young High School)
  • Obi Wan Gritobi (Dominik Wisniewski, P7 Simpson Primary School)
  • Salt-tyre (Cassidy Aitken, Simpson Primary Nursery Class)

David Wilson, the council's Roads Operations Manager said: "This has been a hugely successful campaign which is a bit of fun and gets lots of young people involved and engaged with council services. However there are serious messages including raising awareness of winter and the importance of being Winter Ready."
