Refuse Collectors pass national award

17 April

West Lothian Council's Waste Services team are the first council in Scotland to pass a training and assessment qualification that aims to maintain high safety standards.

The qualification ensures that waste operatives have received training in safety and operational procedures relating to waste collection.

The accreditation is through the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) and delivers Refuse Collection Vehicle (RCV) competence based training and to frontline RCV drivers and waste operatives.

To date 20 council operatives have achieved the NPORS Refuse Collection Vehicle certificate with the remaining drivers and operatives due to complete the training in the coming year.

Jim Jack, Head of Operational services said: "We have a very good safety record in West Lothian and our team should be very proud of their efforts in working towards this national accreditation."

"It's very important that our waste services staff receive continual training and fully understand the industry, dangers and responsibilities as a refuse collection operator."
